Ian Cooper...the early years

Ian Cooper with Shinichi Suzuki - onstage at an early age - with Australia's most famous guitarist Tommy Emmanuel - improvising jazz violin

Born in 1970 into a family of classical musicians, Ian began playing the violin at the age of four. He was his mother’s first pupil, and today Jan Cooper is an internationally respected teacher of the Suzuki violin method.

Ian began his world travels at age seven, and wowed audiences as a child star in the U.S.A, Hawaii, Japan, Canada and Europe.

Ian was awarded a scholarship by the N.S.W. Conservatorium of Music at the age of eight and continued his training there for the next ten years. His studied with world-renowned violin teachers including Harry Curby and Christopher Kimber.

BUT...at the age of 18 all that changed.

Ian swung his attention towards Jazz music and his fiery approach now to the “Devil’s Instrument” is reminiscent of the music of Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt.
